Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) organized its 11th roundtable on CSR Practices and Challenges in Bangladesh at BEI Conference Room on Thursday, August 10, 2006 from 3:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. as an initiative of the CSR Centre at BEI.

The roundtable is a part of the dialogue series on CSR in Action that BEI organizes every month to hear the perspectives of key stakeholders and raise awareness on CSR practices and implementation challenges in Bangladesh. The Centre has successfully organized 10 roundtables till date and over 25 organizations have presented their views on CSR practices in Bangladesh.

Mrs. Yasmeen Murshed, Chairperson, Scholastica Group and Mr. Mamun Rashid, Chief Executive Officer, Citibank N.A., Bangladesh made brief presentations at the 11th Roundtable. The presentations highlighted principles of CSR that are practiced at these organizations and the challenges they face in practicing CSR in Bangladesh.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Farooq Sobhan, President of BEI and the chair of the roundtable said that BEI serves as a platform to uphold and promote international CSR practices and to mould them in the local context.

Mrs. Yasmeen Murshed said that Scholastica has a multi-tiered program of social responsibility both within their educational program and organizational structure. Scholastica starts CSR with their students by encouraging their students to engage with underprivileged children in various activities.

In his presentation, Mr. Mamun Rashid says highlighted the activities of Citigroup Foundation that reflect the CSR of the foundation. He discussed the foundation’s activities focused in three major areas that include financial education, educating the next generation and building communities and entrepreneurs. In addition, he said that Citigroup is privileged to work with the downtrodden and disadvantaged women in Bangladesh.

The roundtable was attended by representatives from development partners, civil society, private sector, young CEOs, professionals and other advocates of CSR.
