A Seminar on Telecom and ICT Industry in Bangladesh: The Past, The Present and The Future

The Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) organized a seminar on Telecom and ICT Industry in Bangladesh: The past, the present and the future at the BEI Conference Room on May 8, 2008. Mr. Anders Jensen, CEO, Grameenphone Ltd. and Ms. Tenzin Dolma Norbhu, Senior ICT Policy Specialist, Global ICT Department, The World Bank, delivered the key note papers. The discussion emphasized the importance of telecommunication and ICT and identified measures to strengthen the growth of these sectors. The seminar was chaired by Mr. Farooq Sobhan, President, Bangladesh Enterprise Institute. The Guests of Honor at the seminar were Maj. Gen Manzurul Alam, ndc, psc, Chairman, BTRC, Mr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Executive Chairman, Board of Investment and Mr. Iqbal Mahmood, Secretary, Ministry of Post and Telecommunication. Mr. Rashid Khan, Chief Executive Officer, Banglalink; Mr. Mamun Rashid, Managing Director and Citigroup Country Officer, Citibank N.A, Barrister Aneek R. Haque, Senior Consultant, BTRC and Mr. Michael Seymour, Chief Executive Officer, Citycell were also present at the seminar as discussants. Senior representatives from the government, ICT sector, private sector, academia and media also attended the seminar.

During the seminar the discussants noted the role of Telecom and ICT sector in facilitating the development process, by moving directly to a globally-connected, information-driven, knowledge-based country. The participants pointed out the issues that require immediate attention, processes to strengthen partnership among the various stakeholders, and tools to improve ICT-related decision-making procedures. Senior government officials informed that the government has taken several immediate steps to strengthen and facilitate the competition of the telecommunication and ICT industry and also praised BEI’s initiative in closing the information gap between the industry and the stakeholders; and also to identify the upcoming technological developments and the role that government can play to facilitate the growth in Telecom and the ICT sector.
