BEI Delegate Visits China

A 5-member delegation from the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) visited the People’s Republic of China from August 13 to August 19, 2007 on an invitation from the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA), Beijing, China.

Mr. Farooq Sobhan, President, BEI, headed the delegation. The members of the delegation were Ambassador AKM Farooq, Ambassador Ashfaqur Rahman, Ambassador Shafiullah and Mr. Shahab Enam Khan.

H.E. Munshi Faiz Ahmad, Bangladesh Ambassador to China received the delegation in Beijing.

During their visit, the delegation exchanged views with various government, non-governmental agencies and academia in China regarding China-Bangladesh and China-South Asia relations. The delegation stressed the need for more bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh and China in the fields of trade facilitation, Chinese investment, infrastructure development, connectivity, tourism, energy and regional cooperation.

The delegation further emphasized that the friendship between Bangladesh and China should be further strengthened by facilitating more people-to-people contacts and regular exchange of visits between the civil society, academia, media and private sector representatives of both the countries. The delegation interacted with scholars in a number of round-table discussions organized by the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), Institute of South Asian Studies at the Yunnan University, and CPIFA.

In an hour-long meeting with Mr. Wu Dawei, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister, Sino- Bangladesh relations were discussed, with specific reference to physical connectivity and reduction of trade imbalance between the two countries. Among others, The delegation met with Mr. Cui Liru, President, CICIR; Ambassador Wang Zhen, Vice-President, CPIFA; Ambassador Yang Wenchang, President, CPIFA; Madam Zhouhong, Director General, Foreign Affairs Office of Yunnan Provincial Government; Mr. Fu Jihong, Deputy Director, Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office; Shao Yu Dong, Vice Chairman, Shanghai Pudong New Area committee, Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference; Professor Wang Chongli, Director, Institute for South Asian Studies, Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences; Professor Zhao Bole, Deputy Dean, Institute Of International Relations, Yunnan University; Mr. Xu Xiaochuan, Director General, The Foreign Affairs & Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, Kunming Municipal People’s Government.
