The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Centre at the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) organized the 13th Roundtable on CSR Practices and Challenges in Bangladesh at the BEI Conference Room on Wednesday November 1, 2006 from 3:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. as BEI’s CSR Centre’s ongoing effort to promote CSR in Bangladesh.
The roundtable is a part of the dialogue series on CSR in Action that BEI organizes every month to hear the perspectives of key stakeholders and raise awareness on CSR practices and implementation challenges in Bangladesh. The Centre also acts as a platform to promote the UN Global Compact, a voluntary international initiative that deals with CSR and to invite the business leaders to join the UN agencies, labour and civil society to support universal environmental and social principles.
At the roundtable, brief presentations were made by Ms. Shaheen Anam, Executive Director, Manusher Jonno and Ms. Sherina Tabassum, Communications Coordinator, BEI.
Ms. Anam discussed in details the areas in which her organization works and highlighted specific CSR programmes that Manusher Jonno supports. Ms. Anam said the goal of her organization is to make poor women, men and children more able to achieve their civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights and to improve their security and well-being. Ms. Anam said that improving CSR has direct linkages with rights and governance and public private partnership.
Ms. Tabassum talked about the UN Global Compact, an initiative proposed and launched by the UN Secretary General, Kofi Anan. BEI acts as the focal point of the local network in Bangladesh and has been working closely with UNDP and the private sector to promote the 10 principles of the Global Compact in Bangladesh. In her presentation, Ms. Tabassum discussed the outcomes of the recent Annual Local Networks Forum held in Barcelona, Spain.
BEI convenes regular CSR Roundtables to bring various CSR practitioners on the same platform and share their views and CSR experiences. The CSR roundtables play a major role in BEI’s ongoing effort to develop a common understanding of CSR.
