On Wednesday, 27 June 2007, the Indian Foreign Secretary, Mr. Shivshankar Menon, spoke at a discussion on Creating a South Asian Community: India-Bangladesh Relations at BEI. Mr. Farooq Sobhan, President, BEI, chaired the event.
Mr. Sobhan discussed briefly the issue of India-Bangladesh relations in the broader context of its role in creating a South Asian community. He spoke of the emergence of China and India as major global powers, the implementation of important organizations, such as ASEAN. The chair emphasized the great opportunities these developments are providing to South Asian nations, who are eager to build a stronger community for themselves. He highlighted the improved relationship between Bangladesh and India in the last 6 months.
Indian Foreign Secretary asserted that the basis for a South Asian community already exists in the commonalities that South Asian nations share. In addition, changes in India, its neighbors and a “relatively benign” international climate, are also providing South Asia with opportunities to unify as a region. Although Mr. Menon acknowledged that India recognizes the asymmetry in trading relations, he argued that India’s neighbours could capitalize on its growth and development as economics is no longer a zero-sum game in South Asia. Furthermore, the international community at large is more prone to engage in both competition and cooperation in a world that is enjoying the benefits of globalization. The Foreign Secretary stated that a peaceful, democratic and prosperous neighborhood is India’s ultimate interest.
The Foreign Secretary’s speech was followed by a question and answer session. The question and answer session involved 14 speakers in total.
The participants in the discussion included former ambassadors and diplomats, business leaders, foreign diplomats in Bangladesh, civil society members and representatives from the media
