The Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) organized an Essay Competition on Corporate Governance on Friday, May 25, 2007. The competition was held at the BEI conference room in two shifts from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. respectively.
The objective of the Essay Competition is to generate awareness and increase knowledge among the student community about the importance of CG practices in Bangladesh. BEI intends to encourage the students, the future leaders, to understand the strategic importance of CG and help them to learn and work on different important CG issues. It is expected that in preparing themselves for the competition, the students will be enlightened about this contemporary topic, will be motivated to learn about its importance and benefits, and will be encouraged to implement the principles of good corporate governance in their respective line of career.
A panel of independent Judges will select three essays based on their originality, clarity, language and use of thoughtful yet concrete proposals for building and improving Corporate Governance in Bangladesh. The cash prize for the top three essays are Tk 15,000, Tk 12,500 and Tk 10,000. BEI intends to hand out certificates and cash prizes within 2 months of the competition through an award giving ceremony.
A total of 89 under-graduate and graduate students from different departments such as Management, Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Economics, International Relations, Law, etc. of 8 public and private universities in Bangladesh registered for the competition. Thirty two students actually submitted the exam based essays..
The students, in making their comments about the competition reflected that this competition helped to get a clear idea about the basic concepts behind corporate governance. The students also said that this competition has encouraged them to study and delve into the depth of the concept of CG and helped them to have a clear picture of CG practices in Bangladesh through their preparatory study for this essay competition. It has also helped them to get ahead of the other graduate and undergraduate students who have not participated in the competition.
BEI hopes that the outcome of the competition will be a more enlightened constituency of individuals with strong understanding of corporate governance practices and principles who will pave the way to build a better Bangladesh. Based on the responses from the students and the teaching community, BEI hopes to organize such competitions every year.
