Event Name : Recent Events

Date : 20 June, 2007- ,

Description :

The Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) organized a ceremony and seminar to launch the Journal of Bangladesh Studies (JBS), a conjoined publication of the BEI, Bangladesh Development Initiative and SPEED (a concern of Scholastica Group). The ceremony was held at BEI on Wednesday, the 20th of June 2007, from 4:30pm to 6:00pm. Mr. Farooq Sobhan, President, BEI, chaired the ceremony.

Mrs. Yasmeen Murshed (Former Adviser to the Caretaker Government and Chairperson of Scholastica Group), Professor Syed Saad Andaleeb (Program Chair, Marketing, Black School of Business: Penn State Erie, USA) and Professor Dr. Farida Khan (Department of Economics and Co-Director of International Studies, University of Wisconsin-Parkside, USA) spoke at the ceremony.

While presiding over the ceremony, Mr. Sobhan said that this initiative, undertaken by BEI, SPEED and Bangladesh Development Initiative, envisages bridging the gap between the academics in Bangladesh and those in the Unites States of America (USA) to promote cross-fertilization of ideas. He is hopeful that the launching of the journal would encourage academic institutions to come forward to help these three organizations to reach out to a wider cross section of people, and attract local academics to contribute to this very prestigious peer reviewed journal. This would also in turn encourage the exchange of knowledge and expertise.

Speaking on the occasion, Mrs. Murshed said there Journal of Bangladesh Studies will fulfill the very niche for peer reviewed journals. She also said that there is no dearth of ideas and opinions but it is time to take a forward step towards academic analysis from mere opinion sharing.

While speaking about the genesis about the journal, Professor Saad Andaleeb said that during his visits to numerous academic institutions, he could not find a single journal on Bangladesh. He said, “Bringing out the journal has been an uphill battle for us.” He then discussed the various challenges he faced in brining out the journal, including the quality of the articles that were turned in. He also said that the rejection rate was 60% to 70%.

Speakers at the seminar said that, to address this lack of expertise to produce scholarly articles, local universities must take the lead to improve the quality of research in Bangladesh, and turn the universities to knowledge generation centres rather than only knowledge dissemination centres. He also mentioned that the universities needed to review their annual budget and allocate adequate funds for research work. They also said that it is essential to provide specialized training in writing and research methodologies to produce scholarly articles.

The JBS includes and seeks to publish scholarly articles from academics, experts and practitioners in various fields concerning Bangladesh. JBS is a peer-reviewed journal, registered with the National Serials Data Program, US, Library of Congress (ISSN No. 1529-0905).

International and multidisciplinary in scope and authorship, JBS has the intention of constructing a bridge between the multiple social science communities across disciplines and countries with a view to share information and provide current and pertinent topics for debate with the widest possible audience.

Among others, participants in the seminar included Dr. manzoor Ahmed, Director, BRAC University, Instittute of Educational Development, Abul Hasan Chowdhury, former State Minister for Foreign Affairs and Dr. S. Ferhat Anwar, Professor, Institute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka.
