Description :

On 14 February 2012, the Canadian High Commission in Dhaka celebrated forty years of diplomatic relations with Bangladesh by co-hosting a seminar with the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) on “Canada-Bangladesh Ties in the 21st Century.”  Mr. Abul Kalam Azad, Honorable Minister for Information and Cultural Affairs, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, graced the seminar as Chief Guest.

He opined that Canada was one of the first countries which recognized the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh immediately after her independence in 1971. Since then, Canada has been one of the major development partners of Bangladesh. Participants at the seminar have mentioned that over the past 40 years, Canada is working together with Bangladesh in strengthening parliamentary democracy, improving the education system, expanding business opportunities and other development areas. Participants were hopeful that the current state of warm relations between the two countries would further grow and Canada would continue to make its contribution to the development of Bangladesh in the coming years through CIDA and other agencies.

H.E. Ms. Heather Cruden, Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, and Mr. Farooq Sobhan, President, Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI), were co-chairs of the seminar. Ambassador (Retd) Mohsin Ali Khan, former Bangladesh High Commissioner to Canada, presented a paper on Bangladesh-Canada Relations and Mr. Masudur Rahman, President, Canada-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CanCham) delivered a paper on Development and Economic Cooperation between Bangladesh and Canada. Participants at the seminar included former ambassadors, government officials, retired bureaucrats, academics and civil society members.
