The Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) and the newly formed Dhaka University Management Club (DUMC) organized a seminar on Corporate Governance: New Skills for New Challenges. The seminar was held on Tuesday June 12, 2007 in the Business Studies Faculty Conference Hall at the University of Dhaka.

Dr. S. M. A. Faiz, honorable Vice-Chancellor, University of Dhaka, attended the inaugural session as the chief guest, and Mr. Farooq Sobhan, President, BEI, was present as a guest of honour. Professors of the Department of Management Studies, at the University of Dhaka, Dr. Durgadas Bhattacharjee, Dr. Shahid Uddin Ahmed, and Dr. Serajul Islam, Dean, Business Faculty, University of Dhaka, were present at the event as Special Guests. Prof. Dr. Khandaker Bazlul Haque, Adviser, DUMC, presided over the seminar.

Corporate Governance experts, Ms. Wendy Werner, FCA, and Mr. Anis A. Khan, CEO and Managing Director, IDLC spoke on Corporate Governance: Models, Theories, and Principles, and Application of Corporate Governance in Bangladesh respectively.

The objective of the seminar was to make students familiar with the fundamental issues of corporate governance, the current practices of corporate governance in Bangladesh, and the importance of corporate governance for business students. In addition, the seminar highlighted the application of Corporate Governance Principles in Bangladesh through regulatory bodies, such as, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Bank.

While emphasizing on the need of teaching the concepts and principles of corporate governance in business schools, Mr. Farooq Sobhan said that globalization and the recent wave of public and private corporate scandals resulted in an increasing demand for improved and enhanced knowledge on corporate governance.

Most European and North American business schools have already started reviewing their curriculum to accommodate the issues and concepts of corporate governance and good corporate citizenship. Mr. Sobhan said that this joint initiative between BEI and DUMC would prove valuable in introducing and incorporating the issues and concepts of corporate governance in the curricula of all the business schools in Bangladesh.

While explaining the principles and theories of corporate governance, Ms. Wendy Werner said that CG is all about aligning the interests of the board with that of the owners or shareholders. Mr. Anis A. Khan made a presentation on the existing corporate governance scenario in Bangladesh and explained the current CG practices in Bangladesh.

Speakers at the programme emphasized the need for good corporate governance practices in Bangladesh to ensure economic growth and stability. Dr. Durgadas Bhattacharjee said that good corporate governance practices ensure the economic stability of a country.
