As part of its ongoing initiatives to create and raise awareness about Corporate Governance (CG) in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) organized a Workshop on Corporate Governance for the board members and the senior management of Prime Bank Limited on September 2, 2006 at the BEI Conference Room. Mr. Farooq Sobhan, President of BEI chaired the opening session of the workshop.

Chairman of the Board of Prime Bank Limited Captain Imam Anwar Hossain; Chairman of the Executive Committee Qazi Saleemul Huq; and Directors of the Board Saheda Pervin Trisha, Kazi Ariful Islam and Mr. Maksudur Rahman Sarkar were present at the workshop.

The Managing Director of the bank M. Shahjahan Bhuiyan; Deputy Managing Directors Nasiruddin Ahmed and Mahbubul Alam; Senior Executive Vice Presidents Md. Rafiqul Islam and Mohammad Abu Abdullah; Executive Vice President & Company Secretary Manash Kumar Ghosh; Vice President & Head of Public Relations Ferdousi Sultana; and the senior management of the bank’s head office and branch offices were also present at the workshop.

At the opening, Mr. Sobhan said that BEI plans to update the Code of Corporate Governance in association and consultation with the Bangladesh Bank, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Banker’s Association of Bangladesh. He stressed that BEI’s remains strongly committed to working with the Bangladesh Bank and the financial institutions of Bangladesh.

As resource people, BEI invited Dr. YRK Reddy, an international expert of corporate governance to conduct the programme. Dr. Reddy is the Chairman of Yaga Consulting and Founder Trustee of the Academy of Corporate Governance (ACG) in India. Local experts – Sheela R. Rahman, Advocate, Bangladesh Supreme Court and Anis A. Khan, CEO and Managing Director, IDLC conducted sessions at the workshop. The experts conducted sessions on Corporate Governance Framework & Development, Legal Duties and Liabilities, Strategies & the Board, Management and the Board and Audit and other Committees. Experts also answered questions put forth by the participants on the various issues discussed.
