A Roundtable Discussion on “Secretary Clinton’s New Silk Road Initiative and the role of U.S. & the challenges and opportunities for advancing the Bangladesh-Burma Relationship”

Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) has hosted a Roundtable Discussion on Secretary Clinton’s New Silk Road Initiative and the role of U.S. & the challenges and opportunities for advancing the Bangladesh-Burma Relationship on Thursday, 20 September 2012. Mr. Neil Kromash, Senior Political Advisor for South Asia, and Ms. Jennifer Hendrixson White, Energy & Environment Advisor, East Asia & Pacific, from the US State Department and others were present at the Roundtable. The discussants emphasized on the fact that Bangladesh has always been a strong advocate of promoting closer economic ties among all its neighbours. They expressed the view that now that Myanmar has undertaken political and economic reforms there is a golden opportunity for both countries to develop a strong economic partnership. However, it was stressed that the Rohingya issue has largely affected the bilateral relationship between the two countries. It was also expressed that Bangladesh believes in the importance of regional connectivity with China and other South East Asian countries and also in boosting its trade with the North Eastern States of India.
