A three-day International Interactive Media Workshop on Reporting on Corporate Governance in Bangladesh

Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) in association with the World Bank group and the IFC Global Corporate Governance Forum (GCGF), organized a three day International Interactive Media Workshop on Reporting on Corporate Governance in Bangladesh to be held on May 30, 2010 – June 1, 2010 from 9.00 AM to 3.30 PM at the BEI Conference Room (House 20, Road 5, Gulshan 1, Dhaka 1212, Bangladesh).
As media has a critical role to play in raising awareness and supporting enforcement by identifying and investigating corporate misdemeanors, it is important that the individuals involved understand not only the issues around corporate governance but learn to effectively and responsibly report on those issues.
Thus, the event has been organised with the general objective of drawing on journalists’ unique ablitity to disseminate information on corporate governance to the business community and to the wider reading public, and to make readers aware of companies’ activities that can have a significant impact on society. The specific objectives of the workshop will be to provide journalists with a concrete understanding of corporate governance as a concept, realization of the importance of corporate governance for the company’s reputation, performance and quality, engage jouranlists in a learning process; focus their attention on the issues surrounding corporate governance and improve their skills in conveying the focal point of stories related to corporate governance through various methods.
Mr. Abul Kalam Azad, Honorable Minister, Ministry of Information had kindly consented to be the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony of the workshop and he will also distribute the certificates to the participants.
International experts including Mr. Paul Gallangher, a former Reuters Business Report editor for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Mr. Tamal Bandyopadyaya, Deputy Managing Editor, Mint (India’s second largest financial daily by readership- a joint effort of Hindustan Times and the Wall Street Journal) and Mr. Martin Steindl, Corporate Governance Officer, IFC moderated the workshop. In addition, local experts from different industries in Bangladesh representing the stock market, the private sector, the media, and regulators etc. also spoke on various aspects of corporate governance.
