Strategic Studies Network Annual Plenary Conference and Strategic Forum November 3 to 9 Bangkok, Thailand

A five member delegation, led by Ambassador Farooq Sobhan, President of BEI attended the Strategic Studies Network Annual Plenary Conference hosted by the Near East South Asia (NESA) Center for Stra¬tegic Studies in Bangkok, Thailand from 3 to 6 November. The Strategic Studies Network’s Annual Con¬ference is the premiere regional forum for opinion-leaders from North Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia to discuss frontier thinking about issues of strategic im¬portance. The 2012 event, “Forward Thinking”, provided multiple avenues for the exchange of ideas within the policy and academic communities. In addition, a Strategic Forum was also organized on the “Challenges of Water and Energy Security in South Asia and the Indian Ocean Region” on 7-9 November.
Over the course of three days the Conference examined governance, natural security, globalization, cyber security and migration in plenary sessions. Parallel topic sessions were also held on various issues which included human security, illicit networks, developments in Syria and energy security. The engine of collaborative research for the Strategic Studies Network continues to be its standing working groups. A short summary of four working groups that has seen active participation by BEI members is laid out below:
1. Economic Integration in South Asia
From BEI, Mr. Farooq Sobhan, President, participated as the Chairman of this working group. Mr. Shahab Enam Khan, Research Director of BEI is also a member of this group and made a presentation on regional integration in South Asia in absentia.
2. Issues of Governance
From BEI, Mr. Humayun Kabir, Senior Research Director, participated at this working group.
3. Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Extremists
From BEI, Mr. Faiz Sobhan, Research Director, participated at this working group.
4. Water Security
From BEI, Mr. Mirza Sadaqat Huda, Senior Research Associate, participated at this working group.
The Strategic Forum on “Challenges of Water and Energy Security in South Asia and the Indian Ocean Region” held on 7-9 November, facilitated the exchange of ideas among preeminent water and energy security experts, including Professor Ainun Nishat, Professor Dipak Gyawali and Mr. Ramaswamy Iyer, among others. From BEI, Mr. Farooq Sobhan, Mr. Shahab Enam Khan and Mr. Mirza Sadaqat Huda participated at this strategic forum.
