Workshop on Combating Terrorism in Bangladesh: Developing a National Counter-Terrorism Strategy

Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) with the support of the USA-based Defense Institutions Reform Initiative (DIRI) against a larger backdrop of national security and civil-military relations in Bangladesh, organized a follow-up workshop onCombating Terrorism in Bangladesh: Developing a National Counter-Terrorism Strategy held on 29-31 July 2010 at Hotel Westin Dhaka,
Barrister Shafique Ahmed, Honorable Minister, Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Bangladesh, had kindly consented to be the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Session of this Workshop.
Mr. Farooq Sobhan, President, BEI chaired the workshop.
The workshop has two major objectives. The first is to contribute to the efforts for enhancing the national security of Bangladesh, in general, and improving and strengthening the civil-military relations in the country, in particular. The other is to construct a comprehensive national strategy for combating terrorism in Bangladesh. The November 2009 workshop organizers and participants agreed to promote the workshop findings among the civilian and security sectors of Bangladesh through a Core Group. This group would provide necessary assistance to the Government of Bangladesh in advancing the workshop recommendations and sensitize the political leadership and civil society about the importance of implementing the workshop recommendation.
