If there was no digital security law, various types of crimes including communal riots would have increased in the country, said the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Mustafa Jabbar. He says, he takes a lot of abuse for this law. But without this law, the extent of communal riots, looting of houses, cyber bullying and harassment of girls would have been unaccounted for.
He said these things while speaking as the chief guest at a function organized by Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) in collaboration with National Endowment for Democracy (NED) at a hotel in Gulshan of the capital on Saturday.
Mustafa Jabbar said, 22,000 porn sites and 6,000 gambling websites have already been closed to prevent cyber crime. Crimes committed through the use of technology must be dealt with through technology. He said that the new generation should lead the digital age and be future oriented. They need to be empowered for the digital age.
Charles Whiteley, Ambassador of the European Union appointed in Dhaka, said that the European Union is actively working on digital citizenship and other related issues in Bangladesh. Vice Chancellor of North South University Professor Atiqul Islam, Secretary of Youth and Sports Ministry Mejbah Uddin, Board Member of BEI and Managing Director of Minhaj Group Minhaj Kamal Khan etc. addressed the event. BEI president and former ambassador M Humayun Kabir delivered the welcome address. Nipa Ghosh, assistant director of BEI, highlighted the overall aspect of the research project titled 'Role of Technology in Strengthening Democracy' conducted by BEI in Rajshahi Sadar and Paba Upazilas.
